Blog #1:
My Workplace I work at the Nexus audio studio in Oakland. It is a music recording studio made for recording also intended for engineering and production. This studio is run by Chris Paxton who is my mentor in the facility. It is a fairly small business which is slowly growing and expanding as time passes by. Once again my work place is in East Oakland and from the outside it looks like a small venue. But when you enter the facility it is very big and roomy containing multiple rooms which can be used from many different musical events or activities. The music studio is ran by Chris Paxton who is a drummer and an engineer in music. The workplace attracts all kinds of different people. From female rappers to R&B male singers. There really is new people that enter the studio every day and bring a unique song into the music workplace. The owner chris paxton has a college degree but I am not certain about every person that comes into the studio to record because there is many different people also they are all different ages. My workplace serves is made to create music played on the radio or online for others to listen to and download. The strengths of my workplace is everyone knows what they are doing and they all have a clue what is going one. The people are very mature and kind greeting eachother when they enter the facility. It isn't necessarily a weakness but if there was one I would say that the recording studio isn't as well known as it should be.

Blog #2: My Mentor:

My mentor name is Chris Paxton and he is the owner of the Nexus Audio Recording Studio. He is a drummer and he engineers all of the artists songs in the studio. Engineers edit the song and quality of the project the artist is working on. A typical day at the Naxus Studio would be first, Chris would start by editing or finishing a track he did in previous sessions. Next he would usually get a phone call from whoever he scheduled that day to record another song and he would work with them for the majority of the day until their session is over. Chris was always interested in music ever since he was younger. In order to become successful in his field of work he needed to attend school and learn everything there is to know about certain programs and learn the ins and outs of the music business.

Blog #3: My Role:

My main responsibility for my project is to advertise the name and represent the business the a correct fashion. My job is very important because I create the first impression to new potential consumers and if I incorrectly do it then it hurts the business. I don't necessarily have a title I just know what I need to do and my mentor instructs me to do certain things for the company. I complete multiple tasks every week. From cleaning the studio to make it look presentable, to learning how to advertise properly and applying it soon after. A regular day at my WLE would be first arriving at 11 and most of the time leaving at 4:30. We start the day by cleaning whatever it is he asks us to then after a couple hours of cleaning we proceed with getting more familiar with our project. In my case it would be learning more about advertising a business properly by using websites such as twitter and facebook. We usually end by talking to Chris my mentor about what we learned and how we contributed to our project.

Blog #4: Project Brainstorm

For my WLE project my mentor and I both decided that it would be wise for me to get involved in advertising the company and learning how self promotion works. We came with the idea after being dismissed from my previous WLE which weren't allowed to attend anymore. Another student is working at the same studio as me so we had to make sure that each student is involved in a different project. I am excited to do this project because I am working in a studio and doing what I like rather something that is forced upon me. I also think this will help me prepare for college because it is allowing me to explore all aspects of a career I may want to pursue. Within the next weeks I need to successfully learn the correct way to advertise a business and try to learn how other programs function. Also, I need to use the obtained knowledge and apply it to the Nexus Studio to gain more costumers.

Blog #5: Progress on my WLE

Today at my WLE I started the day like always by cleaning up the studio and organizing some of the equipment. After I learned more about advertisement and the business aspects of it Chris came to the room I worked in and evaluated my progress. Then he gave me suggestions and answers any of my questions. Chris and I discussed how to advertise his music studio and how to acquire new costumers. We talk about my progress and how much I have been learning and how often I apply what I learned into the project. So far in this project I have accomplished communication between different artists which are potential consumers. I have so far, correctly represented the company and successfully making small but effective additions towards the goal of his Studio receiving more exposer.

Blog #6: Leadership Skills

I am mainly using communicate powerfully and completing projects effectively. For example, I make sure to bring up clarifying questions every session. If I don't have any questions to ask, then I ask about things that I think I would help me complete my project. Also, completing projects effectively because I have been attending each of my WLE sessions on Tuesdays. The only thing is I have yet to get my hour sheet signed but I stayed extra house on my previous day because I still need to catch up on some hours. But from the looks of things that won't be a problem. I am using these leadership skills at my WLE very wisely because I have shown I am really trying to comprehend and understand what is being taught to me. I do independent research most of the time learning and growing on my own in this project but ask my mentor if I need anything clarified. I could prove this by getting it said by my mentor and I can bring up much of the history on the computer where my research is located. I can also show the notes I've been actively taking through out this project. These leadership skills help guide me through my project so I won't get lost or stuck in one spot. So by using these skills I save time and I use it effectively. My mentor Chris uses Thinking Critically and Collaborating Productively, because he engages with his interns and helps solve any problems we have or don't understand. He does this in such a way that he makes us do it as he guides us through the problem.

Blog #7: What I learned, Reflection:

Throughout my WLE experience I learned that I like being involved with other people in the workplace rather than being isolated. I work better when given direction rather than someone trying to do something for me, I learn more from experiencing things. I learned things about myself such as, I can learn from the things that other people have been through and how to properly handle certain situations. For example, Chris explained to me that this is a company he is running, so while i'm looking for potential costumers I must approach them in a respectable business manner. I also learned that I like being in a calm environment because it helps me focus more, or a place that is playing music it makes me want to work more on the task that is front of me. The challenges that seemed to approach me during this WLE project would be, at first not knowing how to talk to other people in order for them being new costumers, and being unfamiliar with equipment at the studio. I managed to overcome these things by asking my mentor Chris many questions and trying my own approaches while he gives me immediate feedback. I also did independent research on some of the equipment that is frequently used throughout studios everywhere. From my experiences here at the studio I have realized that I am still and probably always be very passionate about music and everything that has to do with it. As far as learning goes I believe that I have grew as an individual and a student by learning little things that make a big difference. this project has helped me appreciate and value more than just the musicians that walk into the studio, but the engineers and producers in the game. This WLE that I selected was a good decision because my mentor showed me what went on in the studio and how to handle people that enter the facility. I took a creative approach but also a strategic one, while attempting to assemble new costumers I contemplated thoughts on how to advertise an event that will be going on and the proper way to make it presentable but still enjoyable to look at. Also, picking a studio is pretty creative I believe, most people just decided to intern at a school or food place, not saying those aren't good choices I just think the one I selected is out of the ordinary. My placement for my WLE was very different from many of the students. The Nexus Audio Recording Studio was my second placement. The place I was originally at was a home studio with multiple other students that I knew. Due to actions took by the teachers, staff and situation I was forced to leave that studio and had only one week to find a new WLE place. After hearing good things about the Nexus Studio from my friend Dalton I decided that was the place that suited me best. This proved to be correct, I enjoy it at this studio more because we are always doing something or have something to accomplish by the end of the day. I didn't actually think the people who run a studio are in it the majority of their time. I thought they went for a couple hours than left to do other things. But Chris is always at the studio working with any different artists and genre's of music. He arrives at the studio at 8 or 9 and leaves when night time rolls around. I sort of knew that it was a lot of hard work and dedication but it shown once I witnessed it first hand. It taught me that you need to have a real passion for this business if you want to enjoy the work that you have to accomplish and perform. I learned and more importantly practiced properly communicating with others in the business field. I also practiced promoting the Nexus Studio. In this profession it is very important have good commutation skills in order to get your point across and to get work done in a timely fashion. Promoting the business can only help on expanding it and allowing it to branch out. What I have been doing is important because it helps Chris expand his business and since it is a music studio, the income is base off the people that come by and pay to record. So if I am able to even just get one new costumer than it will help out because that person is most likely to keep returning because artists make more than just one song. Interning at the Nexus Studio has greatly affected my thoughts and choices for the future. It made me think a lot about which exact profession I will pick when I attend college. It allowed me to witness what really happens in the studio, not anything out of the ordinary but just the fact of witnessing first hand how they communicate and get work done. It is a very friendly and comfortable environment to be in.

Blog #8: Professionalism:
In order to get hired for my WLE I had to get in contact with one of my friends who happened to work at the studio. Then I had to visit the facility and my mentor evaluated the work he had me do such as studio maintenance work online and came to a conclusion that it was a good fit for me to be there. The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is by being open minded and prepared by applying to multiple jobs having everything together before hand. This allows you to seem more professional and ready to complete the work they ask you to do if you are hired. As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means being productive, and able to manage many tasks at once and complete them successfully. This shows that you are capable of doing the work without getting off task or being distracted.

Blog #9: Life at my WLE:
1.What did you do today?I arrived at my internship at 10 and started the day off by doing studio maintenance then started to work on advertising my mentors group music video. I spread it to all the websites and pages of people who were interested. I also helped tar down an old room to build an isolation booth. I have learned what I need to do and found more productive and faster ways to complete some of the tasks that my mentor tells me to do. The things that make me like my workplace is all the positivity that goes on in there. Everyone acts in a professional manner with one goal in mind, to complete what they came there to do. I would say the only downside would be having to take bart out to Oakland because I live in Hayward.

Blog #10: The End:
  1. I really enjoyed my time at the studio I interned at. This was a positive experience because it showed me an aspect of the music business which is hard work. This experience had gave me more of an idea of the job I want to pursue in the music business. This has helped me become more determined in becoming a professional in the music field.
